The Alliance of Independent Governments is a major mirror universe power, first encountered in 2387 by the Terran rebellion and Federation starships Pioneer and Christopher Pike. (Star Trek: Pioneer (PNR))

The AIG is based in the Delta Quadrant; its large territorial expanse stretches into the Beta Quadrant. Its founding members were the Borg (mirror), Voth (mirror) and Hirogen (mirror). The Borg and Hirogen make up the main military body of the Alliance and the Voth are mainly used in exploration.

The Alliance expanded toward the more technologically sophisticated parts of the galaxy and by 2387 into the Beta Quadrant. However, in 2387, two Federation starships, Pioneer and Christopher Pike, crossed over from the Federation universe and drew the attention of both the Terran rebellion and the AIG, thus forcing the two powers into contact.

The Alliance of Independent Governments was designed as a way to create a completely opposite Delta Quadrant compared to that of the primary universe. It is called the "Alliance of Independent Governments" to show the difference between the Borg in these two universes.
